Colosseum, Rome, Italy

Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre built in the Roman Empire. It was able to hold about 50 000 people. Colosseum was used for large variety of spectacles ranging from gladiator fights to mythological dramas. It was able to transform quickly from dry land to sea and host simulated sea battles.

There are 2 underground stories under the arena floor containing a system of tunnels. They were being used to house the animals, decors and the gladiators themselves. Nowadays a lot of big stadiums and venues borrow ideas from the Colosseum that allow it to be filled or evacuated quickly.
